Explore Your Team Values

Cohere offers two versions of our 2-hour team values exploration workshop, one for teams with existing values, and another for teams discovering their shared values. Please talk with us about which workshop would be best for your team.

For the team that must adopt shared values

How much time does your team spend on technical disagreements?
How long do change requests get bogged down for when something not covered by the existing styleguide is causing the team to delay the merge while they figure out how to achieve consensus so they can update the styleguide?
How much productivity gets lost when one teammate tries to accommodate another, only to learn later that what's good for one person isn't best for the other?

What if there were some *values* your team could agree on, and use as a standard to resolve all these differences? What if when new differences arise, they could create new values that would resolve related differences in the future?

This workshop helps your team explore who they are as individuals, and how that builds into who they are as a team, and ultimately how that colors the technical decisions they make. At the end of the workshop, your developers will be better equipped to work more smoothly as a group. So the next time someone wants to introduce a little Haskell into the codebase, your team will have the answer for what they want to do about it and why.

For the team that has established values

Shared engineering values can be affirming. It’s so satisfying to have names describing what you hold important, and to feel the shared connection with your organization. But how can you tie these values back to your day-to-day? or in an ambiguous situation?

When your values feel disconnected from your day-to-day, it’s a lot like stale documentation - something to be set aside and treated as distant ideas instead of living action.

For organizational values to be a useful reference, values must be taken up by the individuals in your organization. When engineers take ownership of values, your values stay relevant. They live because of everyday interactions and decisions.

Cohere’s values workshop connects your team to your organizations values, and illuminates opportunities for your team to apply their values in their day-to-day decisions and actions. The workshop runs for two hours and covers the following:

  • Part 1: Applying engineering organization values to your day-to-day
Outcome: attendees connect one value with one day-to-day activity and learn from each other
  • Part 2: Navigating conflict in a value
Outcome: attendees navigate decision making when a value comes into conflict with itself
  • Part 3: Navigating conflict between values
Outcome: attendees navigate decision making when a value comes into conflict with another value
  • Part 4: Bring it all home
Outcome: attendees reinforce learnings around resolving conflicts around values
